2020 Glass Buttes Knap-in Report
On March 20th, Oregon Gov. Brown issued orders for people to 'stay home, stay healthy' to save lives during coronavirus pandemic As might be imagined, attendance was down. It was a shame, too, because the weather was beautiful.
Henry and I each arrived on Thursday, the 19th. On Friday we went up to 16 mile and brought back about 400 lbs of dacite; 220, 80
and several smaller pieces, scale weighed. Emery dropped by and spalled the larger one that afternoon. Saturday morning, still just Henry
and me, so we went back to 16 mile and got another 400+ lbs; one 300 or better (didn't weigh it because I didn't want to crush
my scale). Rocky was there by then, setting up. Gerry Clower came up for a while but didn't knap or stay. Sunday, Henry and I went up below
the sugar pit and picked up 100 lbs of what we hope was gold sheen and had to leave a rock we just couldn't get out of the hole; 300+ and loose
but stuck. We told Rocky where it was so maybe he'll get it out. Monday we knapped at the fire pit; still just me & Henry plus Rocky & Christy.
Christy kept reporting on the dire news about Oregon getting shut down and finally Henry and I decided to get out of Dodge. We high graded
what we had dug up and left the rest for Rocky. We pulled out of camp about 6 pm. Stewart, Meagan and their three girls pulled in as we were
loading up to leave.
Rocky got Bop Popp on the phone while we were there. Bob had actually planned on coming out but fell on Valentines Day
and broke his hip and had just gotten back home after a lengthy stay in hospital and then rehab. At least we know for sure he's still alive. |
